Scope and content
H.W. "Lee" Croft examined his past late in December 1942 as he prepared to take office as Pierce County Sheriff. In his earlier days, he had been a professional and amateur fighter, a logger, Klondike prospector, European traveler and US forester. He was born in 1882 near Centralia, the son of an Australian farmer who was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and grew up in Grays Harbor. He took up fighting at 26 and gave it up at 30 to travel around the world. He married in 1918 and was the father of three children. (T. Times 12/24/1942, pg. 1; 12/25/42, pg. 1)
