Scope and content
In 1943, John E. Nagel (far left), Tacoma manager of the Coca Cola Bottling Company, arranged for the company's head office to donate several hundred, to several thousand, "pastime kits" (depending on the newspaper source) to be distributed to the soldiers at Fort Lewis and McChord Field. Each kit contained ten complete games, playing cards, a memorandum book, score cards and pencils. Helping load an Army truck with kits are Mayor Harry P. Cain (center) and Lt. Col. A. E. Merrill (at left in truck). The other two soldiers are not identified. The shipment filled two large Army trucks. The Coca Cola company had made similar gifts all over the country, but the Fort Lewis shipment was one of the largest. (T. Times, 3/5/1943, p. 4; TNT 3/4/1943, pg. 24)
