Scope and content
Abandoned buildings were set ablaze along the waterfront by the Coast Guard firefighters as part of a cleanup drive by the Tacoma Waterfront Defense Committee at the end of April 1943. The purpose of the housekeeping was two fold, with the most important being the prevention of more costly and dangerous accidental fires. The secondary aim was the collection of discarded and abandoned scrap materials for the war effort. (TNT 4/14/1943, pg. 1; 4/28/43, pg. 1)
