Scope and content

U.S. Coast Guardsmen and firefighters from the Tacoma Fire Department burned down old abandoned shacks on Port of Tacoma property as part of a drive to clean up the waterfront in April of 1943. Long abandoned residences located near the waterway on Port of Tacoma Road were burned with the permission of the property owners. The drive was sponsored by the Tacoma Waterfront Defense Committee. Tacoma, with its port and many war industries, was considered a probable target of enemy attack. Clearing the waterfront would help prevent the spread of costly and dangerous fires. (T. Times 4/28/1943 p.1; TNT 4/28/1943, pg. 1)
