Scope and content
Mr. and Mrs. Thornton Oakley, noted artistic couple, were visiting Tacoma for a few days studying the defense industry. Mr. Oakley was a nationally known industrial artist. He was here to make sketches, photographs and notes for a second series of 16 paintings commissioned by National Geographic. Wartime censorship prevented his itinerary from being published. Amy Ewing Oakley was a distinguished author of a number of books about travel among European and West Indies peoples. (also recorded as D14457A-2.) (T. Times 4/23/1943, pg. 1)
