Four men, including one aboard a Thomas Scalzo Co. Caterpillar, at groundbreaking of the new 60,000+ square foot Peoples Store at the South Sound Shopping Center in Lacey on May 12, 1965. Driving the Caterpillar is William Fitpold, president of Peoples Store. Standing with old-fashioned shovel is E.J. Sharkey, vice-president of Mercantile Stores, New York. Next to Sharkey and unfolding plans is Robert Blume, president of the shopping center with Robert Olson, Olympia, the architect at far right. The new store will open in March, 1966.
