First day of summer camp. New campers and staff listen on June 10, 1968, the first day of summer camp at Camp Murray. Washington state government had opened Camp Murray, a National Guard encampment, to 3000 Tacoma-area youngsters age 7-21 for a free 12-week vacation camp. Under the direction of Wallace Walker, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Opportunity & Development, Inc., one-week stays were arranged with transportation provided throughout the county by National Guard trucks and buses.
