Bill Medlicott (age 16), Bob Ramsey (18) and Roy Pierie (almost 18), from left, posed for a farewell photograph in the early morning hours of June 19, 1943 just prior to their departure for Mexico. The boys were planning to drive their light panel truck south in hopes of becoming more fluent in the Spanish language. Looking ahead, they thought a proficiency in the language would help them in the armed services when they might encounter colleagues who spoke Spanish. Bob and Roy, in their letterman jackets, were recent graduates of Lincoln High School. Bill would return to school that fall. (TNT 6-19-1943, p. 4- alt. photo)
