On February 13, 1969, United States Senator Henry M."Scoop" Jackson, center, was the guest speaker at the ground breaking for the Bank of Washington Plaza (now Wells Fargo) Building at 12th and "A" Streets. Once built it would be the tallest building in Tacoma at 24 stories, 289.5 feet high and occupying 292,000 square feet. Senator Jackson was photographed engrossed in conversation with several men at the construction site. He was elected six times to the House of Representatives and in 1952, successfully challenged incumbent Harry P. Cain for his Senate seat. At his death at age 71, he was the senior U.S. Senator from Washington State and had served in Congress for nearly 43 years. He became an acknowledged authority on the issues of environment, energy and national security. The man on the extreme right is Goodwin Chase, the president and board chairman of the Bank of Washington. (Henry M. Jackson Foundation; TNT 2-14-69, p. 47 ) ALBUM 4.
