Scope and content
As a portrait of Puyallup Valley pioneer Ezra Meeker looks on, the Charles M. Gates Memorial Award was presented to Charles P. Le Warne by the Washington State Historical Society on May 2, 1969. Mr. Le Warne was honored for his contribution, deemed most scholarly, to the Pacific Northwest Quarterly, in the year 1968. At that time, Mr. Le Warne was a high school history teacher in Edmonds. The presentation was held at the Sherwood Inn, 8402 So. Hosmer, as part of the society's annual meeting. Also featured that evening was guest speaker Dr. J. Orin Oliphant, a nationally known historian; an appearance by prominent Seattle banker Joshua Green, Sr.; and a rare short movie about Ezra Meeker, recently found hidden in Meeker's covered wagon at the state historical museum here. The movie would be having its first showing in 54 years. Photograph ordered by the Washington State Historical Society. (TNT 4-27-69, B-24, TNT 5-3-69, p. 12)
