Scope and content
In June of 1943, Amelia (Mrs. Clarence W.) Smith and Genevieve (Mrs. David H.) Freeman, two volunteers from the Red Cross Hospital and Recreation Services dressed in their service's gray uniforms, delivered gifts to an unidentified injured man at McChord Field Hospital. The man received a package of Lucky Strike cigarettes. The Hospital and Recreation Service volunteers visited both McChord and Fort Lewis base hospitals offering convalescent soldiers toiletries, treats and reading material, as well as helping with writing letters and reading to the injured.
