Scope and content
State Mutual Savings Bank. The new home of the State Mutual Savings Bank was located at the corner of So. 11th & Tacoma Ave. So., in close proximity to the Tacoma Public Library and the County-City Building. The building's architects, Johnson-Austin-Berg Associates, were honored with an award for its design by the S.W. Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. It had opened its doors at the new location on March 31, 1969, having previously been located in downtown Tacoma for decades as the State Savings & Loan Association, founded in 1912. In late December of 1969 it was announced that the State Savings & Loan Association was dissolved by its Board of Directors and its name changed to State Mutual Savings Bank. No changes in management were expected. A proposed consolidation of State Mutual Savings and United Mutual Savings Bank was anticipated following approval by regulatory agencies.
