Scope and content
Progress photograph of oil barge work occurring at Canron, Inc., 326 Alexander Ave., in the Port Industrial Yard. Canron, a 123-year-old Canadian firm, was involved in a two-month construction rush job for Venetian Iron Works of Des Moines, Iowa. Venetian had subcontracted the $270,000 job to Canron. The 40 x 165-foot steel oil barge will serve remote Alaska river communities. Canron came to Tacoma in 1975 to finish container cranes started by Star Iron & Steel. They decided to stay and leased the old Star Iron & Steel plant in the tideflats from the Port of Tacoma. Photograph ordered by Venetian Iron West Corporation, Seattle. (TNT 5-11-77, B-9 article)
