Martin-Decker Co. equipment aboard the newly built Western Offshore No. IX which was moored at the Port of Tacoma's Pier 24 in 1977. The 520-foot drillship had a 93-foot beam and a 200-foot derrick. It had nearly 14 miles of anchor line on 12 giant reels. No. IX was designed to drill holes up to 25,000 feet deep in water up to 750 feet deep. The drillship had room for a 120-man crew and a helipad on top of the 40-foot long wheelhouse control console that was used to transport men to and from shore.
