Scope and content
Manuel Acuna Roxas, President-elect of the Philippines, and U.S. High Commissioner Paul McNutt breakfast with Col. A.S. Strickland, commander of McChord Field, during a fuel stopover on a flight from Manila to Washington, DC. The party of twelve spent an hour at the McChord Field Officers Club. The Philippines President-elect read from a prepared speech after the conclusion of his meal. He gratefully acknowledged America's help in the fight against the Japanese and highly praised General Douglas MacArthur. The purpose of his long journey to Washington D.C. was to confer with President Truman regarding a Philippines pledge of military bases and support for their American allies.
