Scope and content

Pacific Telephone and Telegraph, a telephone operator's switchboard, used to connect the calling party to the party being called. Incoming calls light up an area of the switchboard. The operator plugs the end of a wire into the hole in the switchboard that designates the phone near the person being called. If that line is in use it is already lit and the operator can ask the caller if they want to wait or call back. The edge of another switchboard can be seen on the right-hand side.
