Scope and content
The Council of Churches Youth Center, at 115 So. 9th St., opened in 1946 to provide a recreational and social center with a Christian atmosphere for the young people of Tacoma. When it opened, it was the only church sponsored youth center of its kind in the United States. It had eight bowling lanes, billiard tables, ping pong, a lounge and a snack bar. The above photograph, taken on March 6, 1947, shows several teens engaging in the sport of bowling with others lined up to take their turn.
