Scope and content
With the war over, Tacomans in 1947 started thinking about visiting Europe. In April of 1947, Hans Lavik of the Lavik Travel Bureau made arrangements for a group from Tacoma to visit Denmark and Norway. After taking a train from Tacoma to New York City, the travelers boarded the M/S Batory bound for Copenhagen. Mr. Lavik and his wife (at the far right) are in front of a young man holding a banner that says, "From Tacoma to Scandinavia". The Laviks hoped to gather first hand information on travel conditions in northern Europe. (T. Times, 4/15/47, p. 10).
