Scope and content
1947 "Cheyenne" premiere at the Holly Theater in Medford, Oregon. Actor Alan Hale, Sr., in western clothing and sporting a silver handlebar moustache, hugs a young unidentified woman. She is also in western garb and wearing a gun in holster. The movie starred Dennis Morgan, Jane Wyman, Janis Paige and Bruce Bennett and was helmed by noted director Raoul Walsh. It was based on a novel by Paul I. Wellman. Lawless hordes preyed on early settlers in the 1870's. Morgan was a gentleman gambler tricked into hunting for a colorful stage-coach robber. Versatile character actor Alan Hale played the role of Fred Durbin. Mr. Hale was cast in hundreds of films dating back to the silent era. He was able to change his persona to appear in such varied films depicting the war, the wild west, the England of Robin Hood, and doomed Pompeii. (T.Times, 7/8/1947, p.6)
