Scope and content
Workers were busy erecting the trestle for the new East 34th Street bridge, spanning Tacoma's "Eastern Gulch," in July of 1947. This view was from the railroad tracks at the bottom of the gulch looking up into the bridge construction. The new concrete bridge would replace the old wooden bridge built in 1915 and condemned in 1943. Construction would take a year, opening up for traffic in 1948. Once completed the bridge supplied the first direct route to the McKinley Hill shopping district in over four years. Photograph ordered by Mr. Elon Ellis, Timber Structures Inc.
