Scope and content
In July of 1947 work was underway on the new East 34th Street Bridge to span the "Tacoma Eastern gulch." The old wooden bridge, that this new bridge would replace, had been built in 1915 and had been closed since it was condemned in 1943. When completed, the new reinforced concrete arch type structure would be 550 feet long with a 24 foot roadway and five foot wide sidewalks on each side. It was finally completed in January of 1948, opening the first direct route to the McKinley Hill shopping district in over 4 years.
