Scope and content
Lonesome pole cat (skunk) at the City pound. Hundreds of people wanted to own the skunk held at the City pound, shown here with patrolman Roscoe Savage on July 29, 1947. The small, de-odorized skunk was taken into custody when he wandered into a grocery store. The City attorneys searched for a legal precedent to determine who should receive it. The skunk was middle-aged and showed signs of being well cared for. Dozens of people claimed ownership and many others wanted to adopt him. As of July 30, 1947, the City decided that if no legal owner came forth the animal would be auctioned.
