With his books slung over his shoulder on a leather strap, Eddie Stein, age 6, patted his brown & white spaniel Flicka on the head, said goodbye to his mother and headed off for his first day of school. It was September of 1947 and Eddie, who lived at 3816 South Cushman Avenue, was beginning first grade at Whitman Elementary; his teacher would be Miss Edith Mayer. (T.Times, 9/8/1947, p.1)
