Scope and content
Dr. Kenneth S. Hitch, director of research for the Tacoma Public Schools, gives Wendy Gay, age 6, a "readiness test" in this photograph from September 1947. Wendy, the daughter of Bernard and June Gay, had to be tested before she could begin school. The Tacoma school system gave readiness tests to determine whether each child should begin in kindergarten or first grade. The Tacoma schools pioneered in this kind of testing in the Pacific Northwest. (T.Times, 9/4/1947, p.1) Times, Burt McMurtrie.
