The employees of Harkness Rug and Furniture Company assembled outside the company's large retail establishment at South 64th & South Tacoma Way on September 13, 1947. The store would soon be celebrating its 27th anniversary sale as advertised in a large two-page notice in the News Tribune. Established in 1920 by Mr. and Mrs. James Harkness, Sr., Harkness Rug & Furniture was truly a home furnishings store as oil heaters ($89.50), table lamps ($4.95) and even tricycles ($9.95) were on sale. The employees shown above do not include management but separate portraits of the Harkness family including owner Mrs. M.M. Harkness, store manager Jim Harkness and plant manager George Harkness also ran in the News Tribune ad. From L-R, front row: Archie Thompson, C.M. Sather, Vivian Court, Floyd A.
