Men painting totem pole, Times, Burt McMurtrie. This group of men were part of the kick-off campaign for the Clean-Up Tacoma campaign in 1948. Members of the Painters' Union Local 64 donated their time to paint the Tacoma Totem Pole, the scaffolding was donated by Safway Steel Scaffolding and music was donated by 27 of Tacoma's union musicians. The totem pole was carved from a 105 foot cedar log and erected at 10th and A Streets. Twenty-five feet of the pole is underground. Repair and maintenance of the totem pole became the responsibility of the Parks and Recreation Commission. The pole was painted in 1928, 1935, 1948, and 1959. Traditional colors for totem poles is chiefly black, red and green with a distinctive blue and a yellow that was obtained from special earth. (TNT, Page R. Hosmer, 3/16/1946)
