The fire at Dittemore's Coffee Shop gutted the building. The loss was set at $75,000. The two-story building was located 12 miles south of Tacoma on the Tacoma-Olympia highway. The spectacular fire of uncertain origin April 22, 1948, was brought under control by fire departments from Lakewood, McChord field, Fort Lewis and Tacoma. The fire broke out in the basement and moved up through the building through dumb waiters and an elevator. Flames shot 200 feet into the air. Two persons were slightly injured.
