Thousands of Pierce County residents attended the grand opening of the new Parkland Shopping center at the corner of Garfield and C Street South in Parkland on Saturday June 19, 1948. The new two-story building, which cost approximately $150,000 to build, had 12 stores on the ground level and 23 apartments on the second floor. The new stores included: Johnson's Drugs, Margie's Beauty Salon, Sunset Furniture, The Donut Bar and a medical clinic. Herbert Socolofsky acted as master of ceremonies. (T. Times, 6/18/48, p. 11).
