Scope and content

The Army's 190 foot Bailey suspension bridge spanning the Mashel River on the Mount Rainier highway is shown shortly after it collapsed, August 11, 1948, trapping and killing Cpl. Tommie Thompson, age 29, of Holly Ridge, Mississippi. He was in the cab of one of two cranes what were dismantling the bridge. The long arm of one of the cranes can be seen jutting from the wreckage of the bridge. Three men are surveying the wreckage. (T.Times, 8/12/1948, p.1) Bridge over Mashel River, Times, Sandgren.
