Scope and content

Officials from the Army and others are surveying the wreckage of the Army's 190 foot Bailey suspension bridge over the Mashel River on the Mount Rainier highway. The bridge collapsed while it was being dismantled, killing the operator of one of the two cranes working on the bridge.. Officials indicated the combined weight of the cranes being used to dismantle the bridge coupled with the swaying motion caused during dismantling operations may have caused the steel to weaken and collapse.
