During the assembly for bookweek at Mason Junior High School in November, 1948, seven groups of students presented skits based on favorite children's books. Four students, Roy Wright as the Tin Man, Gwen Collier as the Scarecrow, Phyllis Carman as Dorothy, and Warren Brown as the Cowardly Lion, represented "The Wizard of Oz". Students dress as characters from six other books including "Tom Sawyer", "The Yearling", and "Little Women".(T. Times, 11/19/48, p. 7).
