Permanente Metals had just celebrated a one year anniversary, the company had been operating in Tacoma since late 1947. Permanente was producing Kaiser aluminum, which was being used throughout the United States. Alumina powder is reduced in huge furnaces or "pots" to obtain high purity aluminum.
