Scope and content
At 11:55 a.m. on April 13, 1949, Western Washington was rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake. The areas affected by the earthquake included Seattle, Tacoma, Puyallup, Port Angeles, Portland and Vancouver, B. C. and tremors were also felt as far as Idaho. In Puyallup, Cecil L. Archer checked out what was left of an automobile buried under rubble that fell from an adjacent building during the earthquake. Mr. Archer was Puyallup's chief of police from 1946-1963. The area in question was about a block from the old Pacific Northwest Canning Co. building seen in the background at 203 5th Ave. N.W. This was a scene repeated throughout the affected areas. Photo ordered by Life magazine in New York (Life, 4/25/49, p. 34-35 & T.N.T., 4/13/49, P. 1, 12 & 4/14/49, p. 1-2). TPL-1386
