By August 23, 1949, the 28 ton steel cable saddles had been placed at the tops of the two Narrows Bridge towers, and work had begun on stringing the main suspension cables. Each main cable was formed on the job, spun from 19 strands, each strand composed of 458 No. 6-gauge wires. When finished each of the main cables was 20 1/4 inches in diameter.
