Scope and content

A kindergarten class at Tacoma Community House listens while their teacher reads a story from a picture book in April 1950. Originally called the Tacoma Settlement House, the Tacoma Community House has been helping immigrants adjust to a new life in America since 1907. Their building at 1311 So. M St. was a welcoming haven for arriving immigrants since its dedication in 1919. It was replaced by a new state-of-the-art facility at 1314 So. L St. in 1986. Photo ordered by Community House superintendent Lillian B. Ellis.
