Scope and content
Mr. Howard R. Goold and his employees. Headline-makers during Superintendent Goold's tenure were completion of the seventh and eighth floors of Central school, dealing with staff shortages during World War II, a gigantic modernization program in 1947 including authorization to build Geiger and Downing elementary schools, and earthquake damage in 1949. Teachers were required to sign "loyalty oaths" during the McCarthy era attesting that they were not members of the Communist Party. After retirement from the superintendency, Goold was a director of the Tacoma Savings and Loan Association and a People-to-People leader in Europe in 1962. Ordered by the Tacoma Public Schools, Mr. Gould. (For the Record, Winnifred L. Olsen)
