First Sergeant Edwin L. Rager, Korean combat veteran, who was honorary co-chairman of the Tacoma Council of Churches "Clothes for Korea" drive, received the drive's first donation of clothes from Mrs. Richard Schmidt, chairman, on October 3, 1952. First Sergeant Rager had spent two years in front line duty in Korea and had seen thousands of Korean refugees pushed ahead by the armies, first in one direction and then the other. Rager had been wounded four times during his tour of duty and had received the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with two clusters, and the Purple Heart with three clusters. (TNT, 10/12/1952, p.C-16)
