Tacoma Smelter, ASARCO. Fred Birkby, smelter employee, was killed when the slag train he was riding overturned at the water's edge. The track cracked and plunged downward when an "overhang" of slag broke off, carrying the locomotive, six cars each bearing a vat of molten slag and Mr. Birkby into the bay.
