Scope and content
Mrs. Eva Nowland (left) and Mrs. Norman Harris, volunteers from the Lakewood district, have their hands full of March of Dimes posters and mini-donation banks in early January of 1953. The March of Dimes was an annual fundraiser sponsored by the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to raise money to aid in the fight against what was better known as polio. The point was made that even a thin dime, when combined with many others, would accumulate to make a useful contribution. The state health department had previously announced that cases of polio had increased from 448 in 1951 to 1,312 in 1952; therefore, funds were desperately needed to provide assistance to victims and for further research.
