Scope and content
Thirteen year old Sonny Johns won the title of Washington Junior Archery Champion on June 19, 1938 by shooting 1,286 in the Double Junior Round at the state archery competition. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Johns, 4911 North 27th Street, he also won the flight shoot by sending an arrow 179 feet, just 21 feet short of two blocks. One month later, at the northwest competition held in Portland, Oregon, he won the Northwest Junior Championship with the astonishing total score of 2,869 points; he shot three "perfects," a feat which experts at that time contended had never been accomplished in any world competition before. Sonny is pictured here with his bow, arrows, a target and a few of his many trophies. (T. Times, 6/25/1938, p. 12).
