Scope and content
Eight fire companies responded to the blaze at the J. E. Berkheimer Manufacturing Co. on July 7, 1938. The fire started in the afternoon, causing $100,000 damage to roofing materials and the asphalt products company. The photograph shows large stills where crude asphalt was distilled. The blaze was caused by an explosion of molten asphalt in the "saturator," a large machine used for soaking roofing paper in asphalt. (T. Times 7/8/1938, p. 1).
