Scope and content
Gambling in Tacoma taverns; photos taken for Samuel L. Crippen's election campaign. Woman in dress and coat, holding cigarette, standing beside Tycoon pinball machine. Samuel Crippen was the Democratic candidate running against incumbent County Prosecutor Harry H. Johnston. Johnston claimed to have run gambling out of Pierce County; Crippen claimed just the opposite. Crippen's big ace in the hole was his claim that a numbers racket, a baseball pool, was being run by the stepson of Johnston's very own investigator. In September, Crippen was defeated in the Democratic primary by Johnston, who would then face Republican nominee Thor Tollefson. (T. Times 8/23/1938, pg. 7; 8/24/1938, pg. 1)
