Scope and content

Although both Tacoma and Pierce County passed ordinances in 1953 to prohibit the sale of fireworks, they had no control over the town of Milton. Milton sold two fireworks permits, at a cost of $1,000 each, to Pat Moriarty, owner of the Zebra Fireworks Company. His stand 100 feet back from Highway 99 at Milton, about 4 1/2 miles north of Tacoma, did big business, as evidenced by this photograph, and the license fee helped swell the Milton treasury. TPL-4485 (TNT 6/28/1953, pg. D-14) Zebra fireworks stand, ordered by Bernie Crowell.
