Scope and content

DuPont Company's plant in DuPont, Washington. Railroad tracks run throughout the sprawling plant located in rural DuPont which was southwest of Steilacoom between Fort Lewis and the Nisqually Reach in northwest Pierce County. DuPont was originally a company town, named for E.I. duPont de Nemours & Co., manufacturers of explosives. In 1959 the plant celebrated its 50th anniversary at this site with an open house where mass audiences, for the first time, were able to tour the storage location of hazardous materials. Over one billion pounds of explosives had been produced in DuPont since 1909. The plant closed its doors in 1976 after Weyehaeuser purchased its 3200 acres.
