Scope and content
In December of 1953, Ray Otsuka, a 19 year old student, won an all-expenses-paid trip to the New Years Day Rose Bowl football game in Pasadena California via Western Airlines. Here he is shown prior to the flight's departure speaking with stewardess Patricia Fenton of Long Beach, Ca. He won his trip by correctly guessing 17 of 18 game outcomes in the finals of the grid guessing contest sponsored by the Tacoma News Tribune and KTNT TV. Otsuka, a 1952 graduate of Lincoln High School, was studying drafting at the Tacoma Vocational School while waiting for his summons to active duty with the army. He was an avid football fan but too light to play the game, becoming a champion high school wrestler instead. He lived at 1345 1/2 Fawcett Ave and turned 19 on 12/26/1953. In the Rose Bowl game, Michigan State beat UCLA 28-20. (TNT 12/2/1953, pg. 26, 12/31/1953-picture printed)
