Scope and content
Artistic view of St Ann's Home (orphanage) at 6602 So. Alaska, taken in April of 1939. The Queen Anne style shingle home with turrets and covered porch was formerly the J. S. Kemp mansion and was built around 1880. The home, which overlooked Wapato Lake, was purchased in October of 1938 by the Sisters of St. Francis. They remodeled the mansion for its new use, as well as adding a new dormitory. The dormitory was a three story, fireproof brick structure. St. Ann's was formerly located on the grounds of the Byrd estate in Fern Hill, at 8040 So "J" St. St. Ann's home for orphaned and semi-orphaned boys and girls had been a part of the community for 20 years and had supplied care, homes and education to several hundred children. The mansion and dormitory were both declared unsafe by 1971 and were demolished. They were replaced by a modern 5 building complex dedicated in 1973. (T. Times 5/2/1939, pg. 2)
