Scope and content

The new Hylebos Bridge was still under construction when the east leaf was hit by the 2,000 ton steamer "Point San Pablo" on April 5, 1939. The span was initially sprung 4 to 5 feet out of line, but it sprang back all but 10 inches of the distance. The bridge was dedicated in May of 1939. This second Hylebos Bridge replaced a single-leaf, bascule drawbridge that had been built in 1925. The Hylebos Bridge became disabled in January of 2001, and has been stuck in the upright position ever since. (T. Times 4/6/1939 p.18)
