The opening ceremonies for the new Hylebos Bridge were held on May 27, 1939. Members of Committee with badges standing before podium and holding a diminutive ribbon. To the left is Joe Macek, the general chairman of the celebration. A boy and a girl prepare to beat on a large bass drum. During the celebration, a much larger ribbon would be cut opening the bridge. The opening was only ceremonial however, the bridge would not be open to the public until several days later when the state accepted the bridge and turned it over to the city of Tacoma.
