The Fourth of July weekend in 1954 prompted many families to enjoy outdoor activities, including dining alfresco. Thayer Cheatham, age 5 1/2 and her brother North, age 3 1/2, seated on lawn chairs, watched their father Julian Cheatham's cooking techniques while their mother stood ready with wooden bowls.
