Scope and content
A hammer is attached to a spring and released in a powerful arc to pound a "Slow" traffic sign made of plywood, testing for durability. Vandalism of road signs had plagued highway engineers for many years. The Douglas Fir Plywood Association instituted a series of tests to see how different sign materials endured abuse from bullets, bats, bottles and other roadside hazards. The test signs were shot, knocked over, bent and hammered. Fir plywood was found to be the most "vandalism proof" sign material.
